The Shelter Diversion Program for Seniors by NWT-ICS is designed to prevent and address senior homelessness in the Northwest Territories through a mix of prevention, immediate support, and long-term housing solutions. Services include outreach, risk assessments, emergency financial aid, advocacy and housing placement support.

Housing/Homelessness Support
NWT-ICS supports vulnerable residents in Yellowknife through culturally grounded on-the-land programs, housing support services, and senior shelter diversion initiatives. The organization also hosts community BBQs to feed the homeless while working to secure safe, stable housing for them. Additionally, NWT-ICS provides housing advocacy and guidance, helping individuals navigate resources and access long-term housing solutions

Mental Health/Addictions Support
NWT-ICS offers comprehensive mental health and addictions support in Yellowknife, providing counseling, peer support, and wellness programs tailored to the needs of individuals experiencing challenges. On-the-Land Programs
The On-the-Land Program operated by NWT-ICS provides a safe, supportive alternative to traditional shelters for people experiencing homelessness in Yellowknife. Located at Camp Connections, the program offers temporary housing in winterized dorm-style cabins combined with cultural and wellness programming. Elders and staff facilitate traditional activities such as ice fishing, smudging, and crafts, alongside counseling and group supports to promote healing and stability. The initiative emphasizes dignity, cultural connection, and recovery by creating space away from urban pressures where participants can focus on wellness. Its goal is to reduce reliance on emergency shelters, strengthen community supports, and help participants transition toward more stable housing and healthier lifestyles.
