On-the-Land Programs
Program Overview

The On-the-Land Program operated by NWT-ICS provides a safe, supportive alternative to traditional shelters for people experiencing homelessness in Yellowknife. Located at Camp Connections, the program offers temporary housing in winterized dorm-style cabins combined with cultural and wellness programming. Elders and staff facilitate traditional activities such as ice fishing, smudging, and crafts, alongside counseling and group supports to promote healing and stability. The initiative emphasizes dignity, cultural connection, and recovery by creating space away from urban pressures where participants can focus on wellness. Its goal is to reduce reliance on emergency shelters, strengthen community supports, and help participants transition toward more stable housing and healthier lifestyles.
